Landscaping Questions Homeowners Often Ask Me
A few of the questions I hear most often from homeowners across Southwest Florida. If yours is not here, get in touch and I will be glad to help.
What is a Florida-Friendly™ Certified Professional?
It is a landscape expert trained by the University of Florida and IFAS to design, install and maintain landscapes using sustainable practices, with a focus on water conservation and the Right Plant, Right Place principle. I have completed that training. It matters because a pretty landscape is one thing, but a landscape that also performs well in heat, rain and real life maintenance is something else entirely, and I use that knowledge in everything I design, install and care for.
What makes your approach different from a regular landscaper?
I work as a design led service, not a plant drop. I look at how the home presents from the street, how the planting will feel once it grows in, how much upkeep you realistically want, and what will actually suit Southwest Florida conditions. The goal is something that looks beautiful on day one and still makes sense months later.
Do you design for seasonal homeowners?
Yes. Many of my clients spend part of the year in Southwest Florida and part of the year elsewhere. I design and install with that in mind, choosing plants and layouts that hold up well between visits, and my maintenance and checkup service is especially popular with seasonal owners who want someone keeping an eye on the property while they are away.
Do you offer landscape maintenance?
I offer maintenance and checkups for the landscapes I have personally designed and installed. I do that on purpose, so I can stand behind the work, understand every plant choice, and care for the property to the standard we set together. It keeps the service personal and consistent.
What are Landscape Maintenance and Checkups?
It is my ongoing care service for clients whose landscapes I have designed and installed. It covers looking after the overall presentation of the planting, checking how the landscape is performing, monitoring watering concerns, and light care and tidying where needed. It is especially helpful for seasonal homeowners who want peace of mind while they are away.
Where do your plants come from?
Whenever I can, I source plants direct from trusted growers in the Florida growing region. Buying straight from the people who grow them means stronger, healthier material that settles into your garden faster, and it supports Florida growers at the same time.
Can you help if I only want to improve one small section of my yard?
Absolutely. Not every project needs to be a full property redesign. Sometimes the front entry, one tired bed, or the main view from the street is the area that needs attention most. Small, well planned improvements can make a real difference.
Do you design for new homes as well as established homes?
Yes. New homes often need warmth, structure and a plan that makes the property feel finished. Established homes often need a cleaner layout, updated planting, or a design that feels more intentional. I work with both.
Do you work in HOA communities like Ave Maria or Babcock Ranch?
Yes. Ave Maria and Babcock Ranch are two of my key service areas, and I have experience working within both, including the HOA approval process. That familiarity helps me design landscapes that feel right for the home and sensible for the community.
Do you choose plants based on what is trendy?
I choose plants based on what suits the property, the sun and shade, the look you want, and how the landscape will need to be cared for. Trends come and go. A good planting plan should still make sense when the trend has gone off to annoy someone else.
Can my project be done in phases?
Yes. Some homeowners prefer to tackle the front entry first, then the foundation beds, then the side or pool areas later. A phased approach works very well when it is planned properly from the start.
What is the best first step if I want to improve my landscaping?
Identify what is bothering you most. Sometimes it is poor curb appeal, sometimes a messy entry, sometimes planting that feels random or dated. Once I understand what is not working and how you want the property to feel, I can guide you toward the right next step.
