Preparing Your Southwest Florida Landscape for the Rainy Season
Southwest Florida's rainy season generally brings more frequent rainfall, humidity and vigorous growth. Timing and intensity vary each year, so respond to actual weather and site conditions rather than a fixed calendar.

Check how water moves through the property
After substantial rain, observe where water collects and whether beds remain saturated. Persistent standing water may indicate a grading or drainage issue needing specialist assessment. Roots can suffer when soil remains waterlogged. Keep visible drainage paths clear of debris.
Review plants before growth accelerates
Look for dead or damaged branches, plants that have outgrown their spaces and foliage crowding walkways. Pruning should suit the plant and season. Avoid indiscriminate cutting; heavy pruning at the wrong time can remove future blooms or weaken plants.
Do not overwater just because it is hot
Consider rainfall when managing irrigation. An automatic schedule that continues unchanged through wet weather can waste water and stress plants. Check whether irrigation is operating correctly. UF/IFAS and water-management guidance encourage efficient irrigation and avoiding overwatering.
Be thoughtful about fertilizer
Heavy rain can move nutrients from planting areas into stormwater systems. Identify a plant's needs before applying fertilizer, follow product labels and local ordinances, and avoid applications before heavy rain.
Keep beds tidy without over-pruning
Remove debris where it smothers plants or creates an untidy appearance, keep paths clear and monitor weeds early. Maintain mulch at a suitable depth without piling it against trunks or stems.
Use the season to plan improvements
Review areas needing replanting or redesign, while accounting for drainage, species requirements and establishment care. Replacing plants that repeatedly struggle with better-suited varieties may be more effective than repeatedly treating symptoms.
